Gwary Teg Theatre is a new theatre company from Cornwall. Our name means ‘Fair or Beautiful Play’ in the Cornish language. We are a company strongly committed to our heritage in Cornwall, though are also open to working with many cultures from across the world. Our commitment is to Celticity, Community and Creativity. Over the next few years we hope to offer you not only established Cornish drama from the past, but also to break new ground with innovative and progressive new pieces of work. We are happy to work with a number of associated artists who all bring their skills to the Gwary Teg way of doing things. We hope that you will come along and see our shows, and give us feedback about our work.
The company was founded by Alan M. Kent. Alan M. Kent was a born in St Austell. He studied at the Universities of Cardiff and Exeter gaining a Doctorate in Cornish and Anglo-Cornish literature. He is a lecturer in Literature with the Open University and Visiting Lecturer in Celtic Studies at the University of Coruña, Galicia, As well as being a dramatist, he is also an acclaimed novelist and poet. His plays include translations of the Cornish Mystery Play Cycle known as Ordinalia, Nativitas Christi, Oogly es Sin, The Tin Violin, Surfing Tommies, A Mere Interlude, The Beast of Bodmin Moor and Bewmans Peran. Recent academic works have included The Theatre of Cornwall: Space, Place, Performance, Towards a Cornish Philosophy and an edition of the Theatre Works of Charles Causley. His most recent volume of poetry is Interim Nation, and he is editor of Wave Hub: New Poetry from Cornwall. He is the Series Editor of Francis Boutle Publisher’s collection of anthologies of Lesser Used Languages and co-editor of New Perspectives in Cornish and Celtic Studies.
