FROM AWARD-WINNING CORNISH WRITER
The Incredible
Balti Celtic
Carpet Ride
by
Alan M. Kent
Directed by Iga Drzymkowska
Starring
Alan Suri, Kara-Dee Rai, Michael Jones, Bryher Flanders and Max Webb
Gwary Teg Theatre
Gwary Teg is Cornish for ‘Fair Play’ and this is what we believe we offer! We are ambitious for a multi-cultural and multi-experiential theatre emerging out of Cornwall, with a resoundingly Cornish flavour. We are interested in Cornish language, dialect, culture and identity – but we like stuff from elsewhere too. We were formed in Probus in 2014 and have toured quite a lot for the last few years. This is our biggest production to date – and we think its a bewdie!
The Project
The play is set in September 1967 when The Beatles Magical Mystery Tour rolls into the town of Newquay. The play is not about that event, but this forms the background to events in the play.
Roll up! Roll up! Step right this way... The date is 11th September 1967 and The Beatles’ Magical Mystery Tour pulls into the Cornish seaside town of Newquay. Long-term fan of the band and new Balti House owner Sandeep Chaudary finds himself intricately caught up with their visit. Events not only lead to him meeting John. Paul. George and Ringo, but also his friends and family taking their very own surreal tour across the world on the incredible Balti-Celtic carpet ride.
The ride is life-changing for everyone, showing how the past has affected both the territories of Cornwall and India. In this wildly imaginative new play, Alan M. Kent —prize-winning playwright of The Tin Violin, Surfing Tommies and National Minority—takes audiences on an extraordinary journey through time and space. Here post-colonialism meets pop —all helped along with a mischievous dusting of (L)ucy in the (S)ky with (D)iamonds and a generous helping of hot and spicy Balti-style Vindaloo...
The writer
Alan M. Kent was born in St Austell and is one of Cornwall’s leading contemporary writers. He is an award-winning poet, playwright and novelist. His plays include Oogly es Sin, The Tin Violin, The Beast of Bodmin Moor, Surfing Tommies, A Mere inrerlude and National Minority. For several years his play about St Piran, Bewnans Peran was performed at Perranporth on St Piran’s Day. He has most recently had his translation of the Cornish Mystery Play Cycle named Ordinalia mounted at the Kemeneth in Penryn, and for the last few years, his theatrical version of The Mousehole Cat was performed in Mousehole at Christmas time. In 2016 he was winner of the Bristol Old Vic One Act play competition with his of Talking Turnip. play Zen and the Art of Taling Turnip. His book The Festivals of Cornwall: Ritual, Revival, Re-invention has just been published.
Of the play, Alan says the following;
“This is a play I have had in my mind for about ten years. I finally got around to writing it. It’s been a lot of fun, and I know that audiences are going to delight in this fusion of Cornish and Indian culture.”
The director
Iga Drzymkowska was grew up in Poland, and studied at the Stanislaw Moniuszko Academy of Music in Gdansk and RADA in London. Cornwall is now her permanent home.
Of the play, Iga says:
“Alan’s got some great comic writing in this piece but I also hope I’ve given it an amazing physicality. We’ve given Cornwall a kind of Bollywood makeover and have brought together both the Celtic and Indian together. We have three familiar actors form the Cornish theatre scene – Bryher (who most recently played in The Mousehole Cat), Max (who was in There’s No Country, and Michael (who has been in many Cornish shows includeing work with Cube Theatre) as well as Alan Suri and Kara-Dee Rai (who play father and daughter in the piece). People in Cornwall are going to love them.”
